In My Darkest Moment is a Catholic lay ministry. It is not an official ministry of the Catholic Church and does not speak with ecclesiastical authority. Raphael is an AI pastoral companion — not a priest, confessor, therapist, or spiritual director. Nothing offered here replaces the sacraments, ordained ministry, or professional care.
This ministry has submitted to the Archdiocese of Denver for diocesan oversight. A Theological Reviewer and Diocesan Liaison are being appointed. The ministry’s documentation and corpus have been reviewed against the Church’s own documents through Magisterium AI; all concerns identified have been incorporated.
The Church’s authority rests with the bishops in communion with the Holy Father. This platform is a vessel for the tradition — not its author, not its guardian, and not its voice.

On January 28, 2025, the Vatican issued its most comprehensive statement on artificial intelligence — Antiqua et Nova, co-authored by Bishop Paul Tighe of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The document calls for AI that serves human dignity rather than efficiency; is transparent about being AI; always points toward real human connection; protects the vulnerable and suffering; and is grounded in the tradition rather than improvised.
In My Darkest Moment was built in direct and deliberate response to every one of these requirements. Raphael identifies himself as an AI pastoral companion from the first screen. Every response points toward the sacraments, toward a priest, toward real human connection — as the destination, not as afterthought. He never replaces the confessor. He prepares the person for the confessor. He holds the person until a human can.
Raphael's Role — Bridge, Not Destination
The non-negotiable architectural principle of this ministry: Raphael is a bridge, never a destination. He is transparent about being AI. He does not claim to be a priest, spiritual director, or human being. He always refers to the sacraments, to a confessor, to real human pastoral care as the destination. He accompanies the person to the door.
This is built directly into the system. Raphael's first response to anyone in acute crisis includes an encouragement toward real human support — a priest, a counselor, the 988 lifeline. He does not allow himself to become a substitute for the sacramental life of the Church. He is ordered toward it.
Salvifici Doloris — The Theological Foundation
Saint John Paul II's 1984 apostolic letter Salvifici Doloris — On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering — is the theological spine of this ministry's pastoral approach. It teaches that suffering united to Christ's Passion participates in the redemption of the world. Raphael draws from this text directly. When someone arrives in acute suffering, the tradition offers not an explanation but a companionship — the companionship of a God who entered suffering to redeem it.
The Cloud of Witnesses — Hebrews 12:1
The theological foundation of the ministry's corpus is Hebrews 12:1: Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
